Afghanistan ‘Surge” Brings Surge in Wounded

A report recently release by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) found that 2,030 Americans have died in Afghanistan and in the broader Operation Enduring Freedom since October, 2001. However, the staggering numbers lie in the wounded. Between 2001 and 2008 almost 2,700 soldiers were wounded. Since 2008, 14,143 have been wounded. The surge in wounded correspond directly to the surge of troops ordered by President Obama.

From 2001 until 2006, the number of wounded was typically four times the number of killed. From 2007 until 2009 the number of wounded was nearly seven times the number of killed. Then during the troop surge in 2010 the number wounded reached ten times the number of killed, and last year it was twelve times. In 2010 and 2011 alone, 10,441 troops were wounded in Afghanistan.
